Adaptive Rowing

At Avon County Rowing Club, we believe rowing should be an activity that everyone can enjoy. Rowing, like many sports, offers significant benefits to physical and mental well-being, enhancing fitness and confidence. Being outside, immersed in nature, and gliding with the flow of the boat is a wonderful sensation that many describe as profoundly relaxing.

Rowing is accessible to people with a wide range of abilities and needs. While at Avon we are in the early stages of developing adaptive rowing, we are guided by a growing number of successful clubs across the country with established adaptive rowing programmes.

Our approach is very simple – we aim to work with every individual to make adaptations to our equipment, coaching, and outings, so that everyone can take part.

We understand that everyone has unique needs. That’s why we start by meeting you to discuss any necessary adaptations. Whether you need specialist equipment like a fixed seat, adjustments to the boat or oars, shorter outings or the option of being in a boat with an experienced rower, we’re here to tailor the experience to fit you.

We have a friendly group of experienced coaches that support all new members whilst they are learning to row. All of our coaches focus on making your rowing experience safe, supportive, and above all, enjoyable.

We offer a range of rowing options – whether you prefer to row solo in a single or join a crew in boats of various sizes. Our wider and more stable boats are perfect for beginners, and we also provide floats that act as stabilisers for our narrower boats. This means you can enjoy the activity of rowing with added stability, so you can focus on the joy of the sport without the worry of capsizing. Come and discover how rowing can be tailored to suit you, and become part of our friendly and supportive community!

Social Aspects of Rowing

We recognise that the social aspect of rowing is a vital part of the experience. After our outings, members can relax with a tea or coffee and enjoy friendly conversation in our comfortable clubroom. In the warmer months we love to sit on the balcony and watch the world go by. While in the colder months, we like to cosy up inside with a warm drink beside the log fire. Additionally, we have a small programme of social events that run throughout the year.

Racing

At Avon County Rowing Club, we cater to all preferences—whether you enjoy rowing socially or thrive on training and racing. The choice is yours! Adaptive and mixed ability racing is an exciting and rapidly growing aspect of rowing, with many local clubs now hosting adaptive events at their regattas. Join us and be part of this dynamic and inclusive community!

Membership Fees

We believe that financial circumstances should never be a barrier to learning and enjoying rowing. Our club captain can adjust or waive fees as needed. Additionally, we offer support for other costs, such as race entries and kit. Everyone is welcome to join and experience the joy of rowing!

What happens next?

If you are interested in finding out more about us and what we offer, please get in touch. We will arrange an initial discussion about your individual needs, either at the boathouse, or via phone or zoom.

When you start, we usually teach you the basics of the rowing stroke on an indoor rowing machine. This helps us determine if you will need any adaptations to the boat, which may take a few sessions.

Once you’re ready, we’ll get you into one of our larger, more stable boats. Whether it’s a single (one person), a double (with an experienced rower), or a four/quad (mixed ability boat), we’ll ensure you feel comfortable and confident.
