Avon Juniors take 12 event wins at Bewdley Regatta
Avon County Rowing Clubís Junior squad finished its regatta season in style with a fantastic 12 wins over the traditional Bewdley regatta weekend. The event attracts entries from clubs and schools up and down the country; with racing taking place on the River Severn over 800m on Saturday and a 600m sprint on Sunday. Wins were split between Avonís more established crews and a number of new combinations Ė some of which were only put together by Chief Junior Coach Penny Senior on the day of the event in response to withdrawals and injuries.
The Saturday event saw a total of six wins with yet another win for Avonís fast-moving J14 double scull combination of Will Isom and Charlie Cushing who beat Hinksey, Stourport and AB Severn on their way to victory. Isom took the single scull event beating scullers from AB Severn. Monmouth and Derwent with team mates Phoebe Baker-Johnson and Bria Keen taking the girls J15 and J16 age group single sculls events respectively. Keen returned to the water in a scratch combination with Lucy Hart of Stourport where they cruised to victory with wins over Monmouth, Stourport and Avon team-mates Molly Duckett and Poppy Fraser in the WJ17 double scull event.
Final win over the longer course went to Curtis Grainger and Olivier Sharples who could only find competition in the older Novice double scull where they overcame Bewdley in their final.
The shorter Sunday sprint produced another six event wins with Isom and Cushing claiming their age group double scull, Isom the single scull and Keen taking the girlís J16 event. The girlís J15 quad of Phoebe Baker-Johnson, Frede Dellwhite, Poppy Fraser and Amelia Grainger coxed by Carla May reproduced their early season form to romp to victory over Worcester, Ross and Birmingham and Olivier Sharples returned to the single scull where he beat opposition from Worcester, Stourport, Hereford and Birmingham to claim the J15 event. The final win was delivered by two of the Saltford-based clubís newest recruits. The untried J13 combination of Marcus Brend and late substitute Finnola Stratton dominated their double scull event with wins over Ross and Hereford.
