Hereford Regatta

A return to provincial upriver racing at Hereford Regatta saw Avon County Rowing Club claim another haul of trophies after a hard day’s racing for crews of all ages over the 2 lane 1000m course on the River Wye.

Pride of place went to the Avon Junior squad with 5 wins but most popular victory of the day came in the Women’s Masters E  quadruple sculls event for crews with an average age of 55 or more where Suze Eyles, Diana Walker, Philippa Sondheimer and Charlotte Hook had to increase their rate and boat speed to the limit in the last few strokes of their race to come back from behind to claim a 2 foot winning margin over their contemporaries from Ross on Wye RC.

The Avon Junior sculling squad maintained their winning start to the regatta season with wins in J17 single sculls for Harry Roach over opponents from Evesham, Worcester and Stourport and girls J18 single sculls for Ellie McCormack who raced neck and neck with her opposition from Monmouth before claiming victory by ½ length with a final powerful surge for the finishing line. Carla May then combined with each of them in turn to take Open J17 double sculls over a very surprised boy’s crew from the host club and then dominate girls J18 double sculls with comfortable wins over the ‘A’ and ‘B’ crews from Evesham Rowing Club

Final win of the day went to Will Isom and Charlie Cushing who took the boys J14 double sculling trophy in a hard fought event of 4 successive races.

Other Avon women’s and junior crews also produced high class performances and numerous heat wins but were not able to take any further trophies.

Attention will now turn to the National Masters Championships, Henley Women’s Regatta, more GB trials and Thames Valley Park Regatta over the next few weeks.
