Five Out Of Five For The Junior Girls

The Junior Girls of Avon County Rowing Club returned unbeaten from Hereford Regatta with a total of five status wins - virtually all in events where they raced above their own age categories. This was a new event for Avon crews and was raced over a challenging two-lane side-by-side 1000 meter course on the fast-flowing and windswept River Wye.

The youngest winners were Scarlett Roach and Alicia Olds who came through their semi-final of the J14 double sculls event against local rivals City Of Bristol before overcoming Evesham by only a few meters in the final.

The successful Junior 16 squad of Bria Keen, Ellie McCormack, Molly Churchman and Carla May raced up into the J18 quadruple scull event where with thwir sustained high-rate of 34 strokes per minute, they dominated their final against Stourport Boat Club. It was a high class display of crew sculling with Bria steering the coxless boat expertly in the bow seat and gaining much needed practice under pressure before the crew switches back to their own J16 category for Henley Women's Regatta later in June.

The four girls then transferred into smaller boats to gain more practice under racing conditions. May won the senior Women's IM3 category with a comfortable semi-final win over the host club and a superb but very close fought victory over pre-race favourite Watson of Gloucester Hartbury in the final. Churchman also raced in the single scull category - this time in the J17 age group and overcame two scullers from Evesham Rowing Club to claim her second win of the day.

Trophy number 5 for the girl's team came when Keen and McCormack combined in a double scull to win the J18 event over opposition from Cheltenham Ladies College and Hereford.

The solo member of the boy's team racing at Hereford was J13 Will Isom, who raced the entire 1000 meter course stroke for stroke with his older opponent from Worcester Rowing Club, but despite a final sprint missed out on a place in the J14 final by less than half of a boat length.

Members of the senior squad from Avon also raced at Hereford with the Women's IM3 double scullers Angela Ellis and Charlotte cook winning a tight semi-final with City Of Bristol, but narrowly losing out to a Hereford crew in their final.

George Hurst and Ollie Rodway made it as far as the final of their IM3 double scullers event, but a mid-race tactical error meant they narrowly lost out to Evesham Rowing Club.
