National Schools Regatta

Avon County Rowing Club's Junior scullers have returned from National Schools Regatta at the National Water Sports Centre at Nottingham with a set of outstanding results including double medal success for Wellsway School's Molly Churchman.

The first medal of the weekend came in the Junior Girls J15 Double Sculls. Molly and team mate Bria Keen raced over 1000 meters, keen to repeat their 2014 success in the J14 event. After successfully negotiating the time trail, reducing the field of 45 crews to just 18 crews, the Avon duo dominated their race leaving Merchant Taylors, Reading and local rivals Bristol City in their Wake. The 6 boat final saw another strong line up but once again the two Avon scullers produced a superb performance to race home and take gold 3 lengths ahead of Maidenhead and Trentham who took the silver and bronze medals.

Both girls returned to the water on the second day of the 3-day regatta, now racing up an age group in the Girls J16 Double Sculls, but now over the longer championship distance of 2000 meters. Churchman teamed up with Carla May whilst Keen competed with Ellie McCormack. Both Avon crews came safely through the time trail eliminator and found themselves in the same semi-final. Churchman and May narrowly won a tight found contest and progressed to the final where they raced to a well-deserved Bronze medal, narrowly behind Warrington and Maidenhead.

May then took on the challenge of the Girls J16 Single Scull on the final day of the regatta. Carla sealed a fine performance with a place in the final, unfortunately she just missed out on a medal in a final made up of almost entirely GB traillists.

All four girls would now switch to the Quadruple Scull to prepare for their debut at the internationally renowned Henley Women's Regatta in late June.

Other Avon Juniors all raced well during the National School's Regatta with the J14 Girls Quadruple Scull and J15 Boys Single Scull gaining useful experience of the multi-lane course at Nottingham. The More experienced J16 Boys Double Scull of Harry Roach and Nick Selman were unable to build on a series of early season racing wins in a very high quality field in their event.
